35 years ago, Steve Portman's parents started selling plants out front of their property in Clareville with only a wheelbarrow and an honesty box. The wheelbarrow shop soon turned into Carterton's most busy and industrious nursery and garden centre.
Steve and Lou have been together for 25 years and are a very tight team. They, with two young daughters, took over the running of Clareville Nursery 10 years ago and both of Steve's parents are still heavily involved.
With a total of 7 people running the business, Clareville Nursery is one of the biggest direct importer of pots in the Wairarapa/Wellington region. While other garden centres have closed down and disappeared, this one remains strong and is constantly expanding.
The friendliness here is in true Carterton style. If you want to be left alone to browse and enjoy being around the plants and trees, Lou and Steve will leave you alone. If you need help or advice, they are there with any info needed.
Specialists in old fashioned roses, there is a new shipment of roses arriving in three weeks. New Season’s fruit and deciduous trees are due in the next couple of months.
There is a huge movement recently with people getting into growing their own food and there is a lot of choice here. With lots of out-of-towners relocating to Carterton, it's vital having local knowledge on what grows best and how best to plant it. Steve and Lou are your local experts.
Lou loves to dance and Steve surfs when he gets a chance. This couple are true salt of the earth types that you will really enjoy dealing with. With Lou currently doing her Diploma in Small Business and Project Management, they're kept very busy.
This strong family unit have helped turn Clareville into the 'place to go'. With the neighbouring Clareville Bakery, plenty of parking and fantastic road improvements, don't go by without dropping in to say 'Gidday' to this wonderful team.
