Sarah, of Finom, is one of our Carterton Growth Fund Round 2 winners.
Baking has been a hobby for Sarah, of Finom, for a number of years. She was asked to cater a high tea for Kokomai seven years ago, and from there her hobby developed into a business. Finom is the Hungarian word for delicate, tasty or delicious - Sarah states that food should look as good as it tastes, and it should delight all the senses.
She has grown from selling macarons at market stalls to providing nut brittle for Moore Wilsons. Finom is well known for Sarah’s edible pressed flower cakes, and beautiful macarons that can be shipped across New Zealand. Sarah operates out of a small studio commercial kitchen at her residence, with an edible flower garden right outside the door, but her goal is to open her own European inspired patisserie.
An ongoing challenge for Sarah is the cost of ingredients, particularly premium ingredients. Sarah states, "Being small means I have no purchasing power so I am always looking at ways to cut costs, while still using premium ingredients." Getting her name out there has also been a challenge. "If people don't know you are there, they can't buy from you." Sarah continues to build awareness through market stalls, social media advertising, and buildling relationships with other complimentary businesses.
Sarah will utilise the Carterton Growth Fund to develop a brand that can be used for her marketing material, packaging, and website, which will be an asset to the business going forward. Sarah states, “It’s taken a lot of time and perseverance to turn this passion into a successful business and it’s been incredibly exciting and rewarding to see Finom take flight.”
