Lavish Hair Design

Carla Montgomerie, owner of Lavish Hair Design, is a self-defined “Wairarapa girl”: she currently lives on an 18a lifestyle block just out of Carterton, with her husband Richard, two children Blake and Lucy, and numerous animals and stock to keep them busy.

Carla has been hairdressing for over 19 years. She has a “huge passion” for hairdressing, and says, “making people feel amazing is an awesome feeling.” She initially started her hairdressing business from her backyard in Brooklyn Road, in order to work around her two young children.

The business was so successful that Carla was soon working 70 - 75hrs a week, which she says wasn’t sustainable. “It was getting harder to separate home from business. I had enough clients for two senior hairdressers to be honest, so I was one busy lady doing it all by myself.”

Carla and Richard made the decision to sell their property, and move the business into town. Carla says, “We love our home town Carterton, and wanted to add another exciting business to the town.” They moved into a small building next to Balter Bar & Kitchen, and took on three staff members.

However, one and half years later, they had also grown out of this space, and Carla focussed her attention on finding an earthquake-strengthened and modern building to work in and accommodate their clients. Carla says, “We then found 57 High Street North, Carterton, and turned this beauty into one very gorgeous hair salon -  it’s modern, it’s warm in the winter, it’s cool in the summer, it’s nice and bright and has an awesome calm feeling about it.”

Carla says, “We’ve had so many lovely comments about how beautiful our salon is - we’ve had people taking inspiration photos of our salon, and I’ve heard comments that our salon is up there with the nicest ones in New Zealand.”

Lavish Hair Design now boasts eleven hairdressing bays, seven staff (including Carla), and clients from as far away as Wellington and Hawke’s Bay. Carla still puts in big hours, but she has a bigger team to support her. “I just want to do a shoutout to my staff Larissa, Hannah, Alana, Paula, Joanna, Anthony. All of our staff are amazing hairdressers, and are hard-workers. We all get along so well, we are very friendly, bubbly, and professional.”

“Everyone has big smiles on their faces going out our doors, and that’s what we like - putting smiles on our clients’ faces.”

Carla’s business advice is to work hard: “You have to put hours into your business - it doesn’t ‘just happen’.”
